CHAPTER 16

Thane woke to a pounding headache. She tried to open her eyes, but the light was too bright and she closed them again at once. As her mind caught up, she opened her eyes just a little. She was lying on a kind of bed, covered with a worn blanket that smelled clean. It was set into an alcove in a small room with a low ceiling, lit by a flickering lamp on the wall. A woman sat at a table eating a meal, though Thane had no way of knowing if it was breakfast or dinner. She tried to sit up and the pain in her head intensified so quickly that her vision went grey and fuzzy. She couldn’t stop the moan that escaped her lips and it alerted the woman, who glanced round. Seeing that Thane was conscious she smiled reassuringly and left her place at the table.

'You're finally awake! We were worried for a while,' she said cheerfully.

'He - the shadow soldier hit me!' Thane whispered. It was all her head would allow.

The woman nodded. She looked sorry. 'He only meant to knock you out for a little while, but you hit your head on the wall when you fell. Here, drink this.' She held up a cup of steaming liquid.

'What is it?' The smell curling up from the cup turned her stomach

'Something to help your head.' The woman supported Thane's shoulders and held the cup to her lips until she emptied it. 'Now lie there for five minutes and you'll feel better.' She tucked the blanket around Thane shoulders and went back to her meal.

The medicine soured Thane’s stomach and she closed her eyes again, swallowing hard to keep it down. Now that she was awake her body complained loudly. Her head ached, of course. There were sharp stabs of pain from her feet, where she must have cut them on the glass, and most of her muscles hurt as if she had strained them. But there was a dull pain in her left arm at the crook of her elbow that she couldn't identify. She explored it gingerly with the fingers of her right hand. There was a bandage around her arm, covering the wound. Perhaps it was also from the glass. She still seemed to be wearing her pyjamas, for which she was immediately and embarrassingly grateful.

The thumping in her head seemed to have lessened, so she tried to sit up again. This time she succeeded with just a little dizziness and a wave of nausea which she gritted her teeth against until it faded. The woman had finished her meal and was watching Thane with a little smile on her face.

'What happened?' Thane asked. 'Where am I?'

'You were brought here by a rescue team,' the woman answered. 'Nik will be here soon, he will explain everything.'

'Who?' Thane felt as if she had wakened up in another world.

'Don't worry, it'll all be fine.' The woman's tone was soothing, but her eyes were concerned.

Thane swung her legs over the edge of the bed.
